Our Core Values

The principles that guide our work, shape our decisions, and define who we are.

What We Stand For

At Uganda- Helping Hands, our values are more than words on paper — they are the foundation of everything we do. They guide how we serve our communities, how we treat one another, and how we measure our impact.

Every decision we make, every program we implement, and every relationship we build is rooted in these core principles. They reflect our commitment to serving with integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the dignity of every person we encounter.

Our Six Core Values

Compassion

Serving with empathy, kindness, and genuine care for every individual we meet. We see the person behind every struggle and respond with love and understanding.

"We serve because we care, not because we must."

Integrity

Doing what is right, even when no one is watching. Honesty in all our actions, transparency in our operations, and consistency between our words and deeds.

"Our word is our bond. We do what we say, and we say what we do."

Transparency

Open and accountable operations, ensuring donors, partners, and communities see our impact. We share both our successes and our challenges with honesty.

"Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We operate in the open."

Community Empowerment

Building capacity from within, enabling communities to create lasting change. We don't give handouts; we provide tools for self-sufficiency.

"Give a person a fish, feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, feed them for a lifetime."

Accountability

Responsible to those we serve, our donors, and our partners for every decision made. We answer for our actions and learn from our mistakes.

"We are stewards of the trust placed in us."

Human Dignity

Respecting the inherent worth and value of every person regardless of their background, circumstances, or struggles. Every life matters.

"Every person deserves to be treated with respect and honor."

Our Values in Action

These values aren't just ideals — they shape how we work every day:

Compassion in Shelter

We provide a loving home environment for orphaned children, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and cared for as part of a family, not just a facility.

Integrity in Finance

Two authorized signatories required for all transactions. Annual audits presented to members. Every shilling accounted for and used for its intended purpose.

Transparency in Reporting

Annual General Meetings open to all members. Financial reports shared publicly. Donors receive updates on how their contributions are making a difference.

Empowerment in Action

Tailoring skills training that gives women the tools to earn their own income. SACCO loans that help farmers and small business owners build economic independence.

Accountability in Leadership

Board of Directors elected by members. Regular reviews of programs. Community feedback incorporated into decision-making.

Dignity in Care

Every child in our care is treated with respect, given a voice, and supported to pursue their dreams. We never label or stigmatize those we serve.

Our Constitutional Principles

These values are formally enshrined in our organization's constitution, ensuring they guide us for generations to come:

Non-Profit Operation

No member benefits financially from the organization's work

Non-Political & Non-Religious

Serving all regardless of political or religious affiliation

Sustainable Development

Creating lasting change, not temporary fixes

Community Participation

Involving communities in decisions that affect them

Child Protection

Commitment to safeguarding every child from harm

Partnership Collaboration

Working with others who share our values

From Our Founder

These values were born from my own experiences of hardship and hope. When I was a child facing uncertainty, what I needed most was compassion, integrity, and someone who saw my dignity. Today, these values guide everything we do at Uganda- Helping Hands. They are not just words on a page — they are the promises we make to every child, every woman, and every family we serve.
— Bukama Hakim, Founder & Chairperson

Bukama's personal journey from vulnerability to leadership gives him a unique understanding of what it means to be served with dignity. His commitment to these values ensures that Uganda- Helping Hands remains true to its mission of restoring hope and opportunity to those who need it most.

Our Promise to You

When you support Uganda- Helping Hands, you can trust that your contribution is handled with integrity, used with transparency, and directed toward programs that empower communities with compassion and respect for human dignity.
