Restoring dignity, building skills, and creating opportunities for a brighter future
Uganda- Helping Hands runs comprehensive empowerment programs aimed at improving the livelihoods of women and girls. We believe that when women are empowered, entire communities are transformed.
Our programs address the unique challenges faced by women and girls in rural Uganda — from limited access to education and economic opportunities to social isolation and vulnerability to exploitation. Through skills training, mentorship, and economic empowerment initiatives, we help women build independence, confidence, and hope for the future.
Our flagship program provides vocational training in tailoring and sewing. Young women who have dropped out of school learn practical skills that enable them to earn a living, support their families, and regain confidence.
Through the kindness of friends abroad, a GoFundMe campaign helped us acquire these machines, which we still use today. The demand continues to grow as more girls seek training.
Our mentorship programs connect young women with role models who provide guidance, encouragement, and life skills training. Participants learn about goal-setting, self-confidence, and making positive life choices.
We believe that skills alone are not enough — women need confidence, support networks, and guidance to succeed. Our mentors walk alongside participants throughout their journey.
Beyond skills training, we help women access small loans through our SACCO program, connect with markets for their products, and develop business skills to build sustainable livelihoods.
Graduates of our tailoring program can earn income making clothes for their community, selling products, and building financial independence for themselves and their families.
In 2022, we realized that one of the most urgent problems in our community was the lack of opportunities for young girls who had dropped out of school. Many faced a future of limited options, early marriage, or economic dependence on others.
With no resources but a deep commitment to change, we started a small tailoring skills project. At first we had no sewing machines. But through the kindness of friends abroad, a GoFundMe campaign helped us acquire five sewing machines, which we still use today. With those machines, we began training groups of five girls every three months, giving them a skill that could help them earn a living and regain confidence.
"I never thought I could learn a skill. Now I can make clothes for my family and even earn money. The training gave me confidence and hope for my future."
Today, the demand continues to grow as more girls seek training. Each quarter, we receive more applications than we can accommodate with our current resources. Our goal is to expand the program, acquire more machines, and train more women to become self-sufficient.
Empowered women can earn their own income, support their families, and contribute to the local economy. This creates a ripple effect of prosperity throughout the community.
When women are educated and economically empowered, their children are more likely to attend school, stay healthy, and break the cycle of poverty.
Women with skills and income are less vulnerable to exploitation, early marriage, and domestic abuse. Empowerment provides safety and dignity.
Empowered women become leaders in their communities, advocating for change, mentoring others, and building stronger social structures.
"Before the tailoring program, I had no way to support my children. Now I make and sell clothes in the village market. I can pay school fees and buy food. My children are proud of me, and I am proud of myself."
"I dropped out of school when I was 14. I thought my future was over. But Uganda- Helping Hands gave me a second chance. Now I am learning tailoring, and I dream of opening my own shop one day."
"The mentorship program changed my life. My mentor believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. She taught me that I am capable of achieving my dreams. Now I am training other young women in my community."
To expand our empowerment programs and reach more women and girls, we urgently need:
More machines = more girls trained each quarter
Materials for training and starter kits for graduates
Expanded workspace to accommodate more trainees
Sewing machines, materials, and supplies for new businesses
Financial literacy and entrepreneurship workshops
Training more mentors to support women and girls
We dream of a future where every woman and girl in our community has the skills, confidence, and opportunities to build a life of dignity and independence. We envision:
With your support, this vision can become a reality. Together, we can transform the lives of women and girls — and build stronger, more resilient communities for generations to come.
Your support can provide a woman with the skills, tools, and confidence to build a better life for herself and her family. Join us in creating lasting change.
